Summer 2020 CHM8309-L: Materials for Energy and the Environment - Graduate Seminar in Materials Science (with Prof. Luican-Mayer) Materials science is an interdisciplinary field of study focused on the connections between the underlying structure of a material, its properties, its processing methods and its function in applications. In this seminar we cover properties (mechanical, electronic, thermal, optical, magnetic, and electrochemical) of different classes of materials such as 2D materials, nanoparticles, optoelectronic materials, etc. Taught by experts in the field, the lectures will also address how such materials are promising for solving challenges in the areas of energy and the environment.
CHM4380: Advanced Characterization Methods in Materials Science and Catalysis (with Prof. Giorgi) A discussion of physico-chemical techniques from the practical and theoretical point of view. Topics covered will be chosen from the following: high- and ultra-high vacuum techniques, optical spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, chromatography, X-ray, and electron diffraction, electron microscopy, laser chemistry, Fourier transform techniques, electron spectroscopies, magnetic resonance, general instrumental methods. This section will focus on electron microscopy as well as optical spectroscopy.
Winter 2021 CHM 8302 K: Advanced Topic in Inorganic - Synthesis and Properties of Lanthanide-based Materials This graduate course will discuss synthesis, characterization, and potential applications of lanthanide-based nanomaterials with a specific focus on their optical properties.
